Helping lead the change for better mental health

Big Red is proud to announce that we have joined Mates in Mind as a supporter. While the charity works across various industries from logistics to manufacturing, its work within construction to help break the stigma and silence around poor mental health is a huge resource for our sector and something that we’re keen to share with our colleagues.

The HSE estimate that there were 875,000 cases of work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2022/23 with suicide sadly being the biggest cause of death for men under 35.

During The Light House Charity’s visit to our Lomax Street site back in September, it was openly discussed that our colleagues working within construction are three times more at risk of committing suicide when compared to those in other industries.

Stress, depression, and anxiety account for 49% of all work-related ill-health, a figure that drastically needs to be reduced. As an employer to over 35 individuals, the health and wellbeing of our staff continues to be our top priority.

As part of our efforts to continue the conversation and help break the stigma, we’ve recently offered up our Brunswick Site to be part of  The Build Network UK’s latest filming. The former cotton spinning mill in Manchester has been used as the backdrop for the media platform’s latest video in recognition of World Health Mental Day. You can watch the full video here.

Big Red continues to advocate for better mental health for all our colleagues in the construction industry. If you or a colleague is struggling, we urge you to seek help via The Light House Charity and Mates in Mind.
