Toolbox talks: Supporting mental health in construction with the Lighthouse Charity
Earlier this month we welcomed Rob Muldoon and Ray Elliott from the Lighthouse Charity to our Lomax Street site as part of the trust’s #MakeItVisible roadshow.
The aim of the session was to create a safe space for our site operatives to talk openly about mental health and wellbeing, as well as make them aware of the critical support services the Lighthouse Charity provides to frontline trade workers.
It’s widely known that those working in the construction industry are at a higher risk of suicide, which is three times more to be exact. And here at Big Red, our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our staff whether they work in the office or out on site, which is why our SHEQC team invited the charity’s #MakeItVisible colleagues to deliver an informal talk to our site operatives.
During the session, Rob and Ray both talked openly about their struggles with mental health the support they seeked during their careers. The duo also highlighted what support is available from the Lighthouse Charity, whether that be financial help, mental health support or training for soft skill development through MHFA accredited courses.
Commenting on the session, Rob Muldoon from the Lighthouse Charity, said: “We want to let frontline traders know what help is available to them, how to access it and what other support is there for their families as well.
“It’s easy to suppress emotions, ignore how you’re feeling and keep going, but leaning into the help and support that’s out there and understanding how others can support you will help you to get better.”
